Searching for the Original Bible
A New Book by Dr. Randall Price
New School. Higher Criticism. Textual criticism. The Jesus Seminar. The Judas Gospel. Gnosticism. Postmodernism. The Apocrypha. Inerrancy. What do they mean? Should we be concerned about them? Thorough research, informative sidebars, charts, photographs, and clear writing all combine to make this book a significant, up-to-date defense of the inerrancy and reliability of our Bible. How anyone could read this book without having more confidence in the accuracy and dependability of the biblical text we have today would be a mystery to me.

The New Battle for the Bible
As the summer approached my wife and I were invited to a backyard cookout by some friends. While we sat around waiting for the food, one of the ladies started sharing the insights she was gaining from a new book she was reading. She thought I would be particularly interested since it was about the Bible. As I listened to her comments I asked if it was authored by Bart Ehrman, since the views she was expressing sounded much like those in his New York Times best-seller Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why. It was in fact the very book. So I explained to her what this former fundamentalist Chrisitian turned agnostic skeptic was actually saying; that the New Testament (his main focus) was deliberately altered by politically motivated men who introduced intentional changes in their copies of the biblical manuscripts – so much so, that it is impossible to really know what was originally said by Jesus. A bit taken back, she replied that she had not understood it that way. That, of course, is the mastery of deception: that intelligent people can read a book that attacks the Bible without knowing that it does so!
With this in mind, Dr. Daniel Wallace, a professor of New Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary, has warned, “those in ministry must close the gap between the church and the academy. We have to educate believers. Instead of trying to isolate laypeople from critical scholarship, we need to insulate them. They need to be ready for the barrage, because it is coming. The intentional dumbing down of the church for the sake of filling more pews will ultimately lead to defection from Christ.”
In the last century the school of higher criticism ravaged the college and university classroom with doubts about the historicity of the Bible. Today it is “the new school” of early church interpretation, whose theories concerning the origins of christianities (yes, they refer to them as plural!) are being taught today as fact, not only in secular colleges and universities, but also theological seminaries. What’s Going On?
(1) On March 28, 1980 in the neighborhood of Talpiot, a Jerusalem suburb, construction workers accidentally uncovered a first-century burial cave containing ten ossuaries. An ossuary is a burial box used to store bones. Six of the ten ossuaries had names on them: "Jesus, son of Joseph; Maria; Mariamene; Matthew; Judas, son of Jesus; and Jose, a diminutive of Joseph. The excavators published a report of the find, archaeological magazines and journals wrote articles about it, the cave was closed, the bones were re-buried according to Jewish law, and the ossuaries were stored in a warehouse run by the Israeli Antiquities Authority.
(2) Two years ago, Israeli-born and now Canadian documentary producer Simcha Jacobovici was researching a story about the controversy over the James Ossuary. In the process he came across the Talpiot tomb discovery and decided it had greater significance than the excavators had ...
